The Economic Crisis

It's 2009 and the US is an economic turmoil. Daily we hear about the stock market being at an all time low, thousands of people loosing jobs, companies folding and unemployment rising. It's very depressing to watch the news or even read a news paper...but n-e-wayz..

At work, this co-worker began to discuss her views on the economic crisis...now usually I choose to stay out of conversations at work unless they are work related, but she decided to drag me into the fold. She was expressing her views that she was happy the economy was crashes and that she wanted it to keep crashing and for the government to keep printing money so that the value of the dollar would decrease and as she said "all the jobs in India" would come back to the US. (Now in my mind, I was like really, really bitch, WTF..but i was silent). This lady happened to be african-american and all of the co-workers in the immediate area for caucasian. Now I looked around to observe expressions and all the other co-worker had a "this dumb trick" look on their face. I continued to ignore and do my work.

So next I hear, Cameron...you're a recent college grad what do you think? I felt the eyese of the other co-worked move in my direction. I advised that this recession is part of the economic cycle and happens every so often. I explained that due to financial policies of the past, she immediately screamed "Bush"..which I had to say that his policies was a part of it, but not the sole cause of the downfall, financial instituations loaned money to people that were not able to repay it, which caused houses to foreclose and then a trickle down effect. I then explained that we live in a global economy and that our economy's downfall effects everybody, she quickly disagreed. I didn't not acknowledge her with a response. I went into soem detail about how our economy is built on the strenght of consumer spending, etc, etc. I then ended my explanation with, if the our dollar was as weak as you wanted it to become, then your Toyota Camry outside, which is a Japanese manufactured vehicle would not be affordable. She replied "oh, i didn't think of that" (Of course, you didn't)

My fellow white co-workers all agreed with my assessment and one lady told me I"m glad you said something because she was looking real stupid." Now I say all this because this woman as very loud and felt that she was right in what she was saying. It was very embarrasing and as black people in corporate america we need to be on our A-game at all times. Now I don't think she will have much to say to me after that conversation, but hopefully she'll think before she speaks about subjects she knows nothing about.

Now some my call me bougie, stuck up etc, but I just think I'm education but hmm...I digress...

Thanks for reading!
